Projects

We have many goals, and intent to undertake many projects, but the following at at the core of our mission:

A Pilot Study Focused on the Puraguá Wildlife Refuge

We aim to conduct a comprehensive pilot study within an area of high concentration of mountain tapirs in the Puraguá Wildlife Refuge, aimed at evaluating the feasibility and effectiveness of conservation strategies specifically designed for the mountain tapir and its habitat. The study shall encompass extensive research and practical applications to ensure the conservation translates into welfare for the local communities, thus fostering long-term motivation to preserve the species and its ecosystem.

Protection and Restoration of Crucial Habitat Areas for Mountain Tapirs.

SHF is working closely with local communities and landowners to identify, protect, and restore critical habitat areas essential for the survival and well-being of mountain tapirs. This project aims to combat deforestation and habitat loss by replanting trees, enhancing biodiversity within the corridor, and securing more protected areas to ensure a sustainable future for the tapir population

Initiatives for Sustainable Food Production to Enhance Food Security for Local Communities

We are developing strategies for diversified organic production, aiming to increase food self-sufficiency for local communities. The initiatives will prioritize sustainable practices, healthier, and more nutritious products while ensuring the food security of the communities living near the mountain tapirs.

Citizen Science-Based Education Programs

The Foundation will establish a citizen science-based education program in collaboration with local schools, fostering a deeper understanding of biodiversity conservation among students. This program will involve various educational activities, workshops, and hands-on experiences, empowering the youth to contribute to conservation efforts and become future environmental stewards.

Establishment of a Research Center together with local partners

One major milestone we are working towards with the Foundation is the establishment of a Research Center. This center will serve as a hub for studying mountain tapirs and their habitat. It will facilitate collaborative research between scientists, conservationists, and local communities, supporting the preservation of the mountain tapir and associated ecosystems.

Promoting Local Nature Tourism to Benefit the Communities and the Conservation Efforts

The Foundation aims to develop and promote local nature tourism programs, generating economic opportunities for the communities while simultaneously raising awareness about the importance of conservation. By attracting tourists to experience the beauty of the natural landscape and its inhabitants, the Foundation seeks to establish a sustainable economic model that supports.
